There is no background auto-updater. Nothing on your machine changes until you choose to update by re-running the install command. That keeps updates predictable: you decide when, and you know exactly when something changed.
Installs are verified as genuine
When you install or update, the app checks that the download is authentic before it runs. If a file were altered along the way, that check would fail, so a tampered build cannot quietly install itself.
Why the publisher prompt looks the way it does
During install, the system shows a standard prompt that lists the publisher as unknown. This is expected and is not a sign of a problem. The integrity of what you install is confirmed by the genuine-build check described above, not by that label.
